As part of Filmklubben at Moderna Museet coyote curated a special screening of Mr. Dead & Mrs. Free (1982) by the Hungarian theatre collective Squat Theatre. After the screening the evening continued at Moderna Bar, where a sonic soundscape of rare bootlegs and live recordings from Squat Theatre’s Manhattan nightclub in the late 70’s and early 80’s were played.
Mr. Dead & Mrs. Free is a war-disco-musical set in 80’s New York City depicting death, betrayal and desire. In a multimedia performance that combines documentary images with music and live-recorded theater, Squat Theatre blurs the boundary between reality and fiction. An idiosyncratic conglomerate of war scenes, childbirth, musical and dance numbers which is played both on a stage and outside on the street.
